Breast checks at Cure & Care
A clinical breast examination is a physical check your GP carries out to look for any unusual changes. It is not the same as a mammogram, which uses x-ray imaging to look inside the breast tissue.
During the appointment, your GP will check for lumps, changes in shape or texture, nipple changes, or anything else that needs further attention. It is also a good time to raise any concerns you have about your breast health.
If you have no symptoms and are aged between 40 and 74, BreastScreen Victoria offers free mammograms. Women aged 50 to 74 are invited every 2 years. Women aged 40 to 49 are eligible but don't receive a routine invitation. You can book directly without a GP referral by calling 13 20 50.
Breastscreen Victoria
BreastScreen Victoria is a free government mammogram program. You don't need a referral from your GP to book. Call 13 20 50 or go to breastscreen.org.au.

BreastScreen is for people without breast symptoms. If you have a new lump, nipple discharge, or any change in the look or feel of your breast, book a GP appointment first. Your GP can assess you promptly and arrange any diagnostic referrals needed. Don't wait for a BreastScreen appointment if something has changed

Book through HotDoc or call (03) 5614 5614. Let reception know if you would prefer a female GP.
At your appointment
Your GP will go through your history and any concerns. The physical examination takes only a few minutes. You will have privacy and a sheet for cover.
Next steps
If everything is clear, your GP will discuss how often to check going forward and whether a BreastScreen referral makes sense. If anything needs investigating, your GP will arrange this.
