What is a cervical screening test?
In 2017, the two-yearly pap smear was replaced by the Cervical Screening Test. The new test checks for HPV, the virus responsible for almost all cervical cancers. Testing for HPV is more accurate than checking for abnormal cells, which is why the interval is now every 5 years rather than every 2.
The test is for anyone aged 25 to 74 who has a cervix and has ever been sexually active. Your vaccination history doesn't change when you should start. If you're pregnant and due for a test, it's safe to go ahead.
Cervical screening doesn't check for ovarian or uterine cancer. If you have symptoms such as unusual bleeding or discharge between periods, book a separate appointment to discuss them.
Self-collection is available
If you would prefer not to have a speculum examination, you can collect your own sample using a simple swab. The self-collected test is just as accurate as a clinician-collected sample for detecting HPV.
Let us know when you book that you would like to self-collect. Your GP will provide the swab and instructions at your appointment.

At your appointment
Your GP will go through your medical history and explain what the test involves. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. You will have privacy to undress from the waist down and a sheet for cover.
Your results
The sample goes to a pathology lab. Results are usually back within 2 weeks. Your GP will contact you to go through them. Most results are normal. If HPV is found, your GP will walk you through the next steps.
Cost & medicare
Cervical screening tests are bulk billed at Cure & Care for patients with a valid Medicare card. Medicare covers a rebated test every 4 years and 9 months.
The pathology processing is also bulk billed by most pathology providers, so there is usually no out-of-pocket cost for the full test.
