For employers

Workplace drug and alcohol testing is a legal requirement in many safety-critical industries and a widely adopted practice across construction, transport, agriculture, manufacturing, and mining. Employers have a duty under work health and safety legislation to take reasonable steps to ensure workers are not impaired on the job.

Cure & Care provides testing for:

  • Pre-employment screening: required before a worker starts in a safety-critical role

  • Post-incident testing: conducted after a workplace accident or near-miss

  • Reasonable suspicion testing: where a supervisor has grounds to believe a worker may be impaired

  • Random testing: as part of an ongoing workplace drug and alcohol policy

  • Return-to-work testing: for workers returning after a positive result or a period of leave

Standard testing at Cure & Care uses urine drug screening (AS/NZS 4308:2023) and alcohol breath testing. Oral fluid (saliva) testing under AS 4760:2019 is available on prior arrangement. Contact us to discuss if this is required by your workplace policy.

On-site workplace visits for testing can also be arranged with prior agreement from management. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

Any non-negative result is sent to a NATA-accredited laboratory for confirmation before a formal result is reported. This two-step process is what makes results defensible in a workplace disciplinary context.

Employers can set up a direct billing account so workers attend without paying on the day. Contact us on 03 5614 5614 or email admin@cureandcarefamilypractice.com.au to arrange this.

For workers

Drug and alcohol testing at Cure & Care is not only for workplace requirements. Testing is also conducted for:

  • Pre-employment screening required by an employer

  • Ongoing workplace compliance requirements

  • Court-ordered testing, including child custody matters

If your employer or a court order has asked you to complete a drug and alcohol screen, here is what to expect.

The test itself takes around 15 minutes. You will provide a urine sample, which is screened for the drug classes listed below. An alcohol breath test may also be required.

The substances tested under AS/NZS 4308:2023 include:

  • Cannabis (THC)

  • Amphetamines and methamphetamines (including ice and speed)

  • Opiates (including morphine, codeine, and heroin)

  • Cocaine

  • Benzodiazepines

A negative result means no drug compounds were detected above the threshold levels set by the Australian Standard. Results for negative screens are available the same day.

If your screen returns a non-negative result, the sample is sent to a NATA-accredited laboratory for confirmation. This takes 24 to 48 hours. A non-negative on the initial screen is not a positive result. The laboratory confirmation determines the final outcome.

Prescription medications can affect your result. If you are taking prescribed medication, let the collector know before the test.
