Starting a new job often means completing a pre-employment medical before you can begin. At Cure & Care Family Practice in Drouin, our doctors conduct pre-employment medical assessments for workers across West Gippsland, including those heading into construction, agriculture, transport, aged care, manufacturing, and other physically demanding roles.
The assessment checks that you can safely carry out the duties of your role, and gives your employer confidence that you are fit to start. It is not a pass or fail test in the traditional sense. The result is a medical opinion on your capacity to safely perform the work, with any relevant conditions or restrictions noted.
What is a pre-employment medical?
A pre-employment medical is a health assessment conducted after a conditional job offer has been made. According to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the purpose is to identify any physical impairments, injuries, or medical conditions that may put the worker at greater risk of harm in their specific role, and to advise the employer on ways to minimise those risks.
The assessment is tailored to the demands of the job. A warehouse role with manual handling requirements calls for a different focus than an office-based position. Where a specific job description or employer form is provided, the doctor reviews it before your appointment and focuses the assessment accordingly.
Pre-employment medicals are privately billed. There is no Medicare rebate. In most cases the employer covers the cost. Payment is required in full before your appointment. Bring your Medicare card for identification.
Fees vary depending on the type of assessment required. Our team will confirm the cost at the time of booking. Accounts are accepted for employers with a prior arrangement in place.
What the assessment involves
The tests included in a pre-employment medical depend on the role. A physically demanding position in construction or mining calls for a different assessment than an office-based role.
Every assessment includes a medical history review, physical examination, and vision check as a baseline. From there, the doctor determines what additional tests are needed based on the employer's requirements and the demands of the role. Common add-ons include:

Lung function testing (spirometry) for roles with respiratory risk, such as painters or workers exposed to dust or fumes

Audiometry for workers in high-noise environments

Urine drug screen for roles where this is required by the employer or industry standard

Urinalysis for roles requiring general health screening
If your employer has provided a form or job description, bring it to your appointment. The doctor will review it beforehand and let you know what the assessment will cover when you book.

Workcover & work injury consultations
In addition to pre-employment medicals, our doctors see workers with WorkCover claims and work-related injuries. If you have been injured at work, your GP plays a central role in your recovery, and the first step is usually a consultation to assess your injury and complete a Certificate of Capacity.
A Certificate of Capacity is the document used by WorkSafe Victoria and your employer to understand what work you can and cannot safely do while recovering. It records your injury, your current capacity for work, and a timeline for recovery. As your treating GP, the doctor reviews and revises the certificate as your condition changes, communicates with your employer where appropriate, and coordinates any referrals needed as part of your treatment.
WorkCover consultations are billed in line with WorkSafe Victoria's fee schedule. There is no out-of-pocket cost to you for treatment covered under an accepted WorkCover claim.
