Commercial Drivers' Medicals in Drouin
Holding a commercial vehicle licence in Victoria means meeting medical standards that go beyond a standard driver licence. Whether you drive a heavy rigid truck, a multi-combination vehicle, or a bus, you are required to demonstrate that you are medically fit to do so, and that fitness needs to be reviewed periodically throughout your career.
Cure & Care Family Practice in Drouin conducts commercial driver medical assessments for licence holders and applicants across West Gippsland. The assessment follows the Austroads Assessing Fitness to Drive (AFTD) guidelines, which are the national medical standards for licensing in Australia.
Who needs a commercial driver medical?
Under the Austroads AFTD guidelines, commercial standards apply to:

MR (medium rigid) licence holders and applicants

HR (heavy rigid) licence holders and applicants

HC (heavy combination) licence holders and applicants

MC (multiple combination) licence holders and applicants

Bus drivers and drivers carrying public passengers for hire or reward, including taxis, rideshare (Uber, Ola, Didi, etc), chauffeurs, and hire car drivers

Drivers carrying dangerous goods

Drivers subject to Basic or Advanced Fatigue Management requirements under the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme
A medical is required when you first apply for or upgrade a commercial licence. After that, reviews are required at intervals determined by your age and whether you have any relevant medical conditions.
Self-collection is available
If you would prefer not to have a speculum examination, you can collect your own sample using a simple swab. The self-collected test is just as accurate as a clinician-collected sample for detecting HPV.
Let us know when you book that you would like to self-collect. Your GP will provide the swab and instructions at your appointment.
What the assessment involves
Commercial vehicle drivers are assessed to a higher medical standard than private vehicle drivers. The assessment covers the areas most likely to affect safe driving of a large or heavy vehicle:
Vision assessment and colour vision testing
As per Austroads standards
Cardiovascular and respiratory health
Blood pressure, heart conditions, and breathing disorders including sleep apnoea, which is particularly common in heavy vehicle drivers
Hearing
As per Austroads standards
Neurological and cognitive function
Conditions affecting concentration, reaction time, or seizure risk
Musculoskeletal
Physical capacity to operate the vehicle safely
Medications & substance use
any treatment that may impair alertness or reaction time
Your doctor completes the assessment and submits the report directly to the Department of Transport and Planning via the Transport Victoria online medical report portal. You do not need to submit the form yourself.
The department makes the final licensing decision. The doctor's role is to assess your medical fitness and provide an accurate, complete report.
How often is a commercial driver medical required?
A medical is required at initial licence application or upgrade. After that, the review frequency is set by the Austroads AFTD guidelines and depends on your age and any relevant medical conditions.

If you have received a Medical Review letter from the Department of Transport and Planning, bring it to your appointment. The case number and reference number on the letter allow the doctor to pre-populate your record in the online portal.

A commercial driver medical requires more time than a standard consultation.

Commercial driver medicals are privately billed. There is no Medicare rebate. In most cases the employer covers the cost. Payment is required in full before your assessment.
